Week 13 and 14 – Final stretch!

So I have struggled with my motion builder and 3DsMax for over 4 weeks now, and I have finally figured out how to work both programs and be ready to go with my project. I have had so much trouble rigging my skeleton and importing the video into motion builder, but I have now done it and am finally animating, which isnt taking a long as I first thought. I like using motion builder when it doesnt crash on the uni computers. Here is a picture of my skeleton with its sword in 3DsMax that I made myself.

I created the sword by using to cylinders and turbo smoothing them both. Then I exported the whole file into motion builder and parented the sword to the skeleton, so when the hand moves, so does the sword.

I have decided that I am not going to use a sword or shield for my skeleton, as I cant parent them to the skeleton without corrupting the skeleton form, so I will just do my best to make the skeleton look like it is attacking my character with its bare hands/bones.

I animated the first shot of my sequence in motion builder and the animating was fine, I just imported the wrong size video, so when I tried to key out in after effects, it didnt match up. So I will know now to use a back plate for my HD video, so everything will hopefully match up. The good thing is that the skeleton in after effects looks quite good in the footage, and can pass off with looking like it is in the film. I just need to use bright and contrast to make it look more realistic after I have animated all of the required footage. Here is a picture to show you the skeleton in the scene.

I have finished my project! Finally! With time to spare! I had loads of trouble with animating everything and importing it into after effects, but I got through it and I can say that I have done my best. I am quite pleased with the overall film. I rendered it out as a quicktime movie and used the H.264 compressor. I also rendered it in HD. Here is the video and I hope you guys like it as much as I do! Freaks me out with the jerkiness though lol

12th Week for my journal

I have still tried to start animating in both 3DsMax and motion builder and I am all ready to go, but I just cant import my final sequence into any of the programs. I have tried to import it using an AVI, MOV and WMV files, but it wont work. I think the problem is my laptop, as I have downloaded the software and I need to go into uni and use the software there.

I am staying in Leeds over Christmas, so I will be going into uni over the break to get the sequence finished.

11th Week for my journal

I have been tweaking my final live footage in after effects, to get it just right. I want the cuts to flow, like the JATA footage does. I will go through the process of what I did to make the final sequence, to show you that I can do it.

When I opened after effects I created a new composition and changed the setting to work in HD, because that is what I filmed in. I imported all of the film files into the left hand box, and one at a time, dragged them into the bar at the bottom to cut them together to make one sequence. For each shot, I watched the JATA footage and my own, and moved the left and right hand sections of my shot to cut the shot to length. Here is a screen shot to show what I mean.

As you can see, the see through blue parts of my shots are the bits that I have cut off, so it was easier to put each shot one after another.

After that I just repeated the process for every shot that was required until I had all of the shots, one after the other, in sequence. I found it quite difficult at the start to get the shots just right, but I took my time and kept referring to the JATA footage, which helped me a lot in getting each cut just right.

I have left a two second gap where the close up of the skeleton will be, so I will keep the after effects sequence, and add the skeleton shot in afterwards.

I have finally finished the sequence and can now start looking into animating my skeleton. I really need to start putting a lot more effort into this project, because I really want to show what I can do and that I am capable of showing my skill in animating.

9th and 10th Weeks for my journal

I have made two weeks into one, as I have been working on my other two projects for Rory and Duncan, and haven’t done as much work these two weeks as I normally do for this project.

I have finished my sequence and sorted out all my problems with premier pro and after effects. I am falling behind a little bit, as the animating is taking longer than I first expected, but I should have it done withing the next few weeks. I have over Christmas to get it done, so I am confident it will be finished in time.

I have uploaded my video onto youtube just to show you that I have done it. It isn’t in the best quality, as I rendered it quickly. I will render it out in the best quality when I am starting to animate in 3DsMax and motion builder.

8th Week for my journal

I am having loads of difficulty with both after effects and premier pro, as I am trying to cut each shot to length, but it wont let me. And I cant open the shots that Charlie used on her Iphone either, so I really struggling to get the final sequence together. I will have to try and sort out this problem, before I start to get behind with my work, as I cant start the animating until the final shots have been cut together to form a single sequence.

7th Week for my journal

I have encountered some problems with 3DsMax when trying to animate and using a video as a viewport background. I have taken some screen shots of what I mean.

In this shot I went onto render – environment and tried to select my footage, which was the film sequence, but it wouldn’t let me load it for some reason. I tried to change the extension from an avi to a mov, but that didn’t work either, so I am not sure how I am to overcome this. I also tried to use views – viewport background and add it onto there, but it wouldn’t let me either.

I am not sure if the file is too big, or whether I am doing something wrong. I will try and get this sorted by next week, otherwise i am going to have lots of problems when starting to animate.
